Yunnan Province is situated in the most southwest region of China, bordering Vietnam, Laos, and Burma. It encompasses 394,000 square kilometers with a population exceeding 42 million people.  It is larger than both Italy and Japan by land area.  The topography ranges from alpine mountain ranges to tropical rain forests, and has the greatest number of plant species in all of China (over 18,000).  The Province also has the largest variety of wild animals in China, with over 250 species and 10,000 species of insects.  Yunnan is also the most ethnically diverse region of China, with 25 different ethnic minorities residing among its resource-rich lands.

Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province, and its largest city, with a population of nearly 7 million.  The city is at an altitude of 1,800 meters (6,500 ft.) on a low-latitude plateau, giving it a mild climate with a year round average of 18 degrees C (65 degrees F).  It is often called the “City of Eternal Spring,” because it is in bloom all year, and has a more relaxed and quiet atmosphere.  Kunming is also one the cleanest and most environmentally-conscious cities in China.
